Case study – Rivalz

Rivalz Cuts R&D Time by 95%, Delivers Products in Months
Rivalz compressed a 3-to-5 year R&D cycle into just months by putting AI at the center of its benchtop and scale-up operations.

The snack company aimed to launch high-nutrition snacks but faced the reality that traditional formulation and extrusion development would take years and millions of dollars. By adopting PIPA’s Food Innovation Operating System (FIOS), the team moved from concept to commercial product at unprecedented speed.

Approach

PIPA’s food formulation and active learning system evaluated more than 10 million formulations in rapid, two-week prototyping cycles. The platform revealed how ingredient and process parameters interact, enabling Rivalz to optimize taste, texture, structure, and nutrition in a fraction of the usual time.

Impact
3 products launched in 4 months (-95% cycle reduction).
Total development cost of about $1.2M dollars, compared to the typical $4M dollars.
Major sustainability benefits through reduced material use, fewer trial runs, and more efficient scale-up.
A perspective from the Rivalz team

“PIPA was instrumental in the development of the Rivalz Universal Data Asset. This unique resource represents a competitive edge for Rivalz across the supply chain and business model. The impact spans raw material identification, through production parameters and ultimately consumer preference. The data asset generated in partnership with PIPA will be a key enabler as we scale our business.”
