In the news: PIPA Founder, Ilias Tagkopoulos Discusses AI’s Impact on Agriculture on Fox News

Ilias Tagkopoulos, PhD, was featured on Fox News, where he discussed the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in agriculture and food systems. As both the founder of PIPA LLC and the director of the Artificial Intelligence Institute for Next-Generation Food Systems (AIFS), Ilias joined the conversation alongside Mason Earles, assistant professor at UC Davis and AIFS researcher, to highlight how AI is reshaping the food industry and driving a healthier, more sustainable future.

As Ilias explained:

“AI is doing two things. One is making businesses more productive. And the second is to accelerate innovation by focusing on what matters.”

AIFS: Empowering the Future of Food

The Artificial Intelligence Institute for Next-Generation Food Systems (AIFS) is part of a national initiative to advance research on AI’s applications in agriculture. Supported by leading academic and industry partnerships, AIFS focuses on using AI to transform the food supply chain, enhancing productivity, sustainability, and food quality through innovative solutions.

The institute’s work spans across all facets of agriculture, from the production of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and meats to advanced data integration with research labs and companies of all sizes.

As Mason Earles noted:

One of the powers of AI is that it can process a massive amount of data in a very short amount of time and achieve really high performance in pattern recognition.

This capability enables applications such as detecting pests or diseases in crops, guiding farmers on where to apply fertilizer, and even using robotics controlled through virtual reality.

However, Ilias acknowledged a key challenge:

The cost of these types of technologies is always a challenge.

Looking to the future, Ilias envisions a more connected and collaborative agricultural landscape:

We see in the future more data being generated, more tools becoming available—easier, much less expensive AI tools to give recommendations on when to irrigate, when to farm, and where to sell. More collaboration among farmers because now they understand they need to share their data. It’s not about competition; it’s about everybody winning.
